Pediatric Behavioral Physiology Laboratory

Examining the interface among human emotions, behavior, and physiology

The Stanford Pediatric Behavior and Physiology Laboratory is part of the Early Life Stress Research Program directed by Victor Carrion, M.D., Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Since the spring of 1999, the Stanford Pediatric Behavior and Physiology Laboratory (PBPL) has sought to better understand the relationships between human emotions, behavior, and physiology. In the lab, physiological information is collected from research participants as they perform different tasks (such as watching a video, participating in an interview, talking or playing with a family member). This physiological information includes the measurement of heart rate, skin temperature, and respiratory rate. Our understanding of an individual's "biology" provides a rich look at their approach to life and challenges, and helps us to better understand their behavior and emotions.
