Pediatric Behavioral Physiology Laboratory

Lab System

Our lab utilizes behavioral, physiological, and neuroscience approaches:

In the lab, physiological information is collected from research participants as they perform different tasks (such as watching a video, participating in an interview, talking or playing with a family member). This physiological information includes the measurement of heart rate, skin temperature, and respiratory rate. We use the James Long Co. integrated system that includes a bio amplifier, audiovisual recording equipment, and computers (physiological data acquisition computer & VITC computer that allows synchronization between video and physiological data recordings). The computer algorithm that captures physiological data is time stamped along with the videotaped behavioral interaction, allowing second-by-second evaluations of participant physiology to be linked with behavioral displays on the videotape. In addition, the lab system can collect physiological and behavior data from two individual participants simultaneously.

Physiological Measures include . . .

Heart Rate (ECG)

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA)

Respiration (Respiratory Period/Tidal volume)

Skin Conductance/Response

Pulse transmission time and pulse amplitude

Temperature

Movement/Activity
